Pigeons are part of everyday life in all cities. However, urban pigeons are not wild animals: they are feral descendants of domesticated pigeons that seek proximity to humans. Genetically, city pigeons are descended from the rock pigeon, which means that they find very good nesting opportunities in cities - for example on house facades or in awning boxes. Food is usually available in abundance in the form of leftovers and illegal feeding. However, a pigeon population that is too large causes problems: the animals become ill more easily and people feel disturbed.
Managed pigeon lofts are considered by experts to be the most effective form of population control for urban pigeons. The pigeons find nesting places and species-appropriate food in the loft, which has a positive effect on the animals' health. As pigeons are very loyal to their location, after a while they spend most of their time around the pigeon house. The advantage: a large proportion of the droppings accumulate in the loft and can be easily disposed of. The eggs are exchanged for plastic dummies, which leads to a reduction in the population size in the long term.
In Bad Godesberg, the city of Bonn has already maintained a pigeon house on Theaterplatz since 2012. Following a decision by the main committee, a location for a second pigeon house in the Bonn district was sought with the help of the Stadttaubenhilfe Bonn association as an expert partner. The grass verge at the central bus station near the southern underpass was chosen as a suitable location. Around 400 pigeons live in the "catchment area" between the ZOB, train station, Kaiserplatz and Gangolfstraße. As the ZOB will be rebuilt in the coming years, a mobile pigeon house was procured in the form of a construction trailer specially converted for this purpose. The installation location was closely coordinated with the planning of the new ZOB. A construction fence will protect the pigeon mobile from vandalism.
Why is compliance with the feeding ban particularly important now?
The species-appropriate control of the pigeon population at the ZOB, which is designed to have a lasting effect, can only be successful if the illegal feeding of pigeons is stopped. Otherwise it will not be possible to bind the pigeons to the pigeon mobile. The wrong food can also be harmful to the animals. For the benefit of humans and animals, the city therefore appeals to people to observe the city-wide feeding ban. Illegal feeding is an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine of up to 1,000.
