Notarization of certificates for the transportation of narcotics when travelling abroad

Overview

General information

If you wish to take narcotics with you on a trip abroad, it is necessary to carry a corresponding certificate. This certificate serves as proof of your requirements and can be presented to the customs authorities on request. For this purpose, the public health department certifies special forms based on the doctor's prescription. There are two recognized sample forms for taking narcotics abroad. Which form is required depends on where you are traveling to. These forms and further information can be found on the website of the Federal Opium Agency of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). You can find the relevant links from the BfArM under "Forms and links".

Traveling to member states of the Schengen Agreement

For travel to member states of the Schengen area, you require a certificate in accordance with Article 75 of the Schengen Convention.

Travel to non-Schengen countries

For travel to countries outside the Schengen area, the Federal Opium Agency recommends carrying the following multilingual certificate:

The respective certificate must be completed by your doctor and certified by your local health authority. The Bonn Health Authority is locally responsible if either your habitual residence is in Bonn or your doctor is based in Bonn. Please note that a separate certificate is required for each narcotic prescribed. Narcotics can be carried for a period of up to 30 days. When traveling outside the scope of the Schengen Agreement, it is necessary to obtain information on the exact import regulations from the diplomatic representation (consulate, embassy) of the country of entry before starting your journey.
