Tips for protection against backwater from the municipal drainage network

Basements or other low-lying rooms are often flooded during downpours or heavy thunderstorms. This is usually due to the fact that these houses are inadequately protected against backwater from the sewer network. Considerable damage is often the result.
The capacity of the municipal sewer network cannot be designed to drain every amount of precipitation, no matter how large. According to the municipal drainage regulations, every owner must protect themselves against any backwater from the public sewage system up to the top of the street.
The City of Bonn is not liable for damage caused by missing or poorly maintained backwater protection devices. The details are regulated in the drainage statutes of the City of Bonn and in the regulations "DIN 1986 - Property drainage systems".
If your house does not yet have a backwater device, please contact the Civil Engineering Department of the City of Bonn. They will be happy to advise you and suggest ways in which you can protect yourself against backwater from the sewer network.
