The society has set itself the task of promoting the study of Mongolia, its culture and history, expanding mutual understanding between the two peoples and deepening personal relations. Since its foundation in 1973, the German-Mongolian Society - which has since been renamed - has dedicated itself primarily to maintaining and promoting cultural and academic relations with the Mongolians. This also includes the communication of scientifically proven knowledge about those areas of Central Asia, Russia and China in which Mongolians live.

In the course of the opening of the once socialist Mongolian People's Republic to democracy and a market economy, as well as to international tourism, the society has expanded its objectives to include political, social and humanitarian contacts. At the beginning of the 1990s, it also initiated and supervised the distribution of medical supplies, mobile dental treatment centers and other relief supplies.
