Gleditsia - This name refers to Johan Gottlieb Gleditsch (1714 - 1786), director of the Botanical Garden in Berlin.
Deciduous, large park tree with an irregularly shaped crown, up to 30 meters high and 20 meters wide; picturesque appearance.

Stem: branches with conspicuously large three-spined tips (there is also the variety "inermis" - without spines)
Bark: gray-black-brown, deeply fissured, scale-like, flattening
Leaves: doubly pinnate up to 30 centimetres long and three centimetre long individual leaflets, striking yellow autumn coloration
Flowers: small, inconspicuous, greenish petals
Fruits: flat, dark brown, shiny, leathery pods up to 40 centimetres long, striking fruit decoration, also suitable for decoration; belongs to the Leguminosae or Fabaceae family; not completely drought and frost resistant, flood tolerant in America, of high ecological value; wood is red-yellow and brittle, therefore somewhat brittle (risk of wind breakage)
