Koelreuteria: The name honors Joseph Gottlieb Koelreuter (1733 - 1806), professor of natural history and pioneer of plant breeding by grafting.
Deciduous; small tree or large shrub, up to 15 meters tall and wide, with a rounded, later flat crown, often crooked, therefore not suitable as a safe street tree.
Suitable in parks and gardens as a small tree with pinnate leaves and striking yellow flower panicles.
Leaves: pinnate to 35 cm long; leaflets up to 15 cm long, ovate, elongated, lobed, dark green, yellow to brown in autumn.
Flowers: yellow, upright panicles up to 30 cm long
Fruits: inflated, lampion-like, paper-thin capsules, first green, later reddish brown, spherical black seeds
Characteristics: resistant to urban climates, drought tolerant, sensitive to surface compaction.
