City of Bonn

Station 3: Green facades

A touch of jungle in the city

Ivy grows up the wall of the Windeck bunker
House wall with ivy.

Many a wall in Bonn's urban area is populated by climbing or creeping plants. The best-known representative is the common ivy (Hedera helix), but the native common clematis (Clematis vitalba) and the "wild vine" (Parthenocissus inserta) are also popular.

This can create truly green, jungle-like walls that are buzzing with life: birds such as blackbirds, wrens, sparrows and others love ivy-covered walls as nesting sites and hiding places. The flowers and fruits attract numerous insects and are an important source of food in the heavily sealed* city. In autumn and winter, the evergreen ivy is a refuge for animals and also provides a pleasing splash of color.

* An area is sealed when oxygen and rain cannot reach the ground directly. In the city, this is particularly the case with asphalted surfaces (roads, parking lots, buildings). However, healthy soil as a habitat for countless soil organisms and the roots of plants and trees requires oxygen and water.
