On the wall, lying in wait...
Walls are extreme habitats. If they are south-facing, i.e. exposed to strong sunlight, they mimic a rock biotope for thermophilic plants. Other walls are shaded and damp, with mosses and ferns growing on them. Only very frugal specialists are satisfied with a little loosened mortar as a soil substitute and defy gravity with strong roots.
These plants would often not stand a chance in "normal" soil, as they would quickly be overgrown by other plants. This is why these otherwise rare species have found their "niche" in the truest sense of the word between the cracks in the wall and, when in bloom, provide an additional source of food for insects. Wall cavities also offer hedgehogs, mice and lizards shelter and breeding grounds.
