A new era in the handling of urban data

The establishment of Urban Data Management(UDM) marks a decisive turning point in the handling of urban data. The geodata infrastructure(GDI), which has grown steadily since 2014, currently manages around 2,400 map themes that are used by 2,300 users. It is fundamental for the fulfillment of a variety of urban tasks. However, it has now reached the end of its technical life and is being replaced by a more advanced Urban Data Platform(UDP).

Digitization and the associated increase in digital data stocks require a modern system that meets today's technical requirements. The core of this new system is the UDP, which not only replaces the existing GDI, but also offers significant added value compared to the old system through the integration of real-time data, metadata directories, analysis tools, AI methods and dashboards. The software is based on the open source project Masterportal, which is used and further developed in cooperation with more than thirty other municipalities and federal states.

The UDM aims to revolutionize and strategically align the management of urban data. Through a central platform, urban data sets are efficiently networked, enabling better use and management. Our approach ensures that data quality and timeliness always meet the highest standards. This includes a clear data strategy and data governance that ensures data quality and data sovereignty in the long term by assigning rights and roles. An important aspect is to raise awareness of the value of urban data in administration, citizens, politics and business in order to achieve data excellence together.

The metadata directory makes the data searchable. The UDP interfaces support digital processes that function seamlessly and without media disruptions. The UDP data can be comprehensively analyzed and presented in various formats, including 3D. Once the project has been completed, all offices will benefit from quality-assured data provision and an IT infrastructure that meets the requirements of future-proof urban data management. An essential part of the project is therefore also the cultural change in the administration, which promotes openness for evidence-based decisions and digital processes.

Overall, the UDM project is more than just a technological innovation. It is a decisive step towards a smarter, more efficient and more transparent city administration that is ready to meet the challenges of an increasingly digitalized world.
