Scarlet fever

Scarlet fever or streptococcal angina (inflammation of the palatine tonsils) is a bacterial disease with a skin rash or evidence of germs on the tonsils (palatine tonsils). Complications such as rheumatic fever can occur. Vaccination is not yet possible.

Symptoms and incubation period

Inflammation of the palatine tonsils, also skin rash in scarlet fever. The time between infection with the pathogen and the onset of the disease is two to four days.

Contagion

Infection is possible for three weeks without treatment and for 24 hours after antibiotics have been administered.

Contact persons and re-admission

Contact persons may continue to visit the community facility. The family doctor should decide on prophylactic antibiotic treatment. Infected persons are allowed to return to community facilities such as schools and Kita after three weeks without treatment and on the following day after antibiotics have been administered. A certificate from the parents confirming the administration of antibiotics is required. A doctor's certificate is not required.
