Head lice

Anyone who has head lice suffers from severe itching. They do not make you ill, but they are contagious. Sometimes you can already see crawling lice when combing your hair. The lice eggs are called nits and can usually only be seen with a magnifying glass. They stick firmly to the hairline as dark dots.

Size ratio of match head to louse and nit on hair

If the hair is dark, the hair will look thicker in this area due to the nits. If your child has head lice, they must be treated properly. It is not enough to treat the head just once. Some lice could otherwise survive and multiply again.

To combat lice and their eggs, you will need an active ingredient against lice (pediculicide) and a nit comb (both from the pharmacy) as well as a hair conditioner (from the drugstore). Various active ingredients can be used. Please read the package leaflet carefully or seek advice from a pharmacist or pediatrician.

Prevention of spread and contact persons

To prevent the further spread of lice, the child may only return to the facility after treatment has begun. Close contacts of the child (family and friends) may continue to attend school or Kindergarten. However, they must all be examined and treated if they are infested with lice. It often makes sense to treat the sibling at the same time.

Please make sure that you boil and clean the nit comb briefly before using it to examine other family members (including adults).

Supplementary measures

Change towels, pyjamas, underwear and bed linen and wash at a temperature of at least 60°C. Combs, hairbrushes, hair clips and hair elastics should be cleaned in a hot soapy solution.

Non-washable items can be heated in the oven at 45°C for one hour or stored in the freezer for one day at a temperature of at least -10°C to -15°C.

Headgear, scarves and other items that may have been infested with head lice should be stored in a plastic bag for three days. Insecticide sprays are not necessary.
