Febrile illnesses

A fever is defined as a body temperature above 38°C. Fever occurs when pathogens cause infections in a person's body. Fever is therefore a normal and usually successful defense against infections.

Fever is usually caused by infectious pathogens. For this reason alone, your child should not go to school! A sick child needs plenty of rest, fluids and attention!

Complaints

Body temperature over 38°C, (38-39°C = moderate fever, over 39°C = high fever) the affected person suffers from a feeling of illness. It is therefore best for sick people to stay in bed and not reduce the fever (e.g. with paracetamol suppositories) as long as it does not exceed 39°C and no febrile convulsions occur.

In any case, please inform the pediatrician or the emergency doctor if your child shows the following signs of illness: High fever above 40°C, if fever-reducing measures such as suppositories and calf compresses do not work, skin rash, shortness of breath, severe headache and impaired consciousness. This could be a serious infection that requires immediate treatment.

If you go to the pediatrician, please call the practice in advance so that no other children in the waiting room are infected.

The nursery teachers are not authorized to look after sick children!

After overcoming the infection, the recovering child needs at least one more day to recover. This is the same for children and adults.

Incubation and infection

The incubation period, i.e. the time between infection with the pathogen and the onset of the disease, varies depending on the cause of the fever. The same applies to a possible infection.

Contact persons and re-admission

Siblings without symptoms may continue to attend Kindergarten or school. A sick child may return to school or Kita one day after being free of fever and symptoms. A doctor's note is not required.
