Now, as planned, the previously unused area is also to be designed with inclusive sports and leisure facilities for all generations. The implementation of the second construction phase will complete the transformation of the park into a "place for everyone".
The plans for the concept are the result of an initiative by the Bonn Children's and Youth Ring, the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, the Stadtsportbund, the Bonn Disabled Community and the Lucky Luke association, which have been promoting the concept of a park for everyone since 2013. The city administration has submitted the preliminary planning for the second construction phase to the relevant specialist committees and the Bonn district council. At its meeting on November 26, 2024, the district council commissioned the administration to commission the design planning based on this and then to submit it to the political committees together with a cost calculation.
"As an inner-city meeting place, Reuterpark already offers people with and without disabilities opportunities for play, sport and recreation. With the second construction phase, we want to sensibly supplement the facilities so that even more Bonn residents can use it in the future," explains Mayor Katja Dörner.
Barrier-free sports area central element
After the first construction phase primarily created play and recreational facilities, the second construction phase focuses on inclusive sports facilities for young people and adults. It covers the 8,200 square meter northern area of Reuterpark and is based on the first construction phase both visually and conceptually. The central element will be an approximately 1,480 square meter barrier-free sports area, which will be lowered topographically and surrounded by a flower meadow embankment. The area will feature a streetball court with a basket, a multifunctional playing field with an adjustable net for volleyball and badminton, a calisthenics facility with inclusive stations and a boulder and graffiti wall that is around 26 meters long and four meters high (as a noise barrier). Stool benches and benches with backrests are to be installed along the edges of the playing field.
Floor trampolines and table tennis table
A further sports area with two ground trampolines is to be created in the western area of Reuterpark. In addition, a small area with a table tennis table and seating will be set up to provide additional opportunities for exercise and play. There will also be a barrier-free toilet facility and three additional groups of racks for parking bicycles. A second drinking water fountain is also to be installed above the ramp, centrally between the sports area and the skate park. The existing trees will be completely preserved and integrated into the new concept and new trees will be planted to provide sufficient shade on the sports area.
Completion possible by the end of 2026
The cost estimate is around three million euros. According to the current schedule, the expansion could begin in April 2026. Construction is expected to take around eight months, meaning that the second construction phase could be completed by the end of 2026.
