Opole and Bonn district enter into town twinning agreement

The city district of Bonn and the city of Opole in Poland are planning to upgrade their friendship with a ceremonial signing of a document in 2025: they would like to officially enter into a town twinning partnership.

The Bonn district council passed a resolution to this effect at its meeting on March 11, 2025. Opole is the capital of the Opolskie Voivodeship and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Around 128,000 people live there. The city friendship between Opole and the district of Bonn was established in a document dated May 2, 1997. The most important goals of the city friendship are the free intellectual exchange in all essential areas of municipal tasks as well as the promotion of culture and science. This takes place in particular in the field of local history and customs, in schools, between young people and in the areas of social welfare and sport.

Between 2006 and 2022, the activities of official representatives within the framework of the city friendship came to a virtual standstill. Contact was resumed in 2022. Since then, official delegations have visited each other several times. After 28 years and in light of the more recent visits, the city administration is in favor of upgrading the relationship to a town twinning. The official representatives of the city of Opole have already declared their interest in such a change on several occasions.

Bonn's district mayor Jochen Reeh-Schall: "Together with my colleagues in the district council, who together with me submitted the application for the renaming, I am delighted that the Bonn district council has voted positively after such a long time to implement this goal set out in the 1997 document."

The official twinning document will be signed during a visit by representatives from Opole to Bonn or as part of a trip by representatives from Bonn to Opole.
