City of Bonn

Citizen participation in the Südstadt parking space concept

The City of Bonn invites you to a participation event on the parking concept for the Südstadt area on Monday, March 20, 2023, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chamber of the City Hall. Afterwards, suggestions can be made for 14 days via the city's participation portal www.bonn-macht-mit.de.

The study area comprises the part to the southwest of the railroad line and is bounded by Reuterstraße to the south, the Botanical Garden and Poppelsdorf Allee to the west and the railroad line to the northeast. It is therefore not congruent with the Südstadt district.

The area under investigation borders Bonn's city centre and is characterized by a dense, predominantly Wilhelminian-style building structure and a high population density. In addition, the Bonner Talweg as a central axis and district center with many stores and restaurants as well as some large employers in the south characterize the study area.

The analysis shows that there are considerable problems finding parking spaces due to third-party parking, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. Full management of the existing public parking spaces with resident parking regulations is therefore recommended.

The information event

The information evening will take place on Monday, March 20, 2023, from 6 p.m. in the Council Chamber of the City Hall, Berliner Platz 2. No registration is required for this participation event, which is based on a resolution passed by the Bonn district council on January 31, 2023. The commissioned expert office will present and explain the results of the study and the resulting recommendations. Employees of the administration will then explain the further procedure up to the implementation of the parking concept.

Central components of the strategy include

  • Standardization of parking regulations,
  • Securing resident parking through the introduction of resident parking regulations with the application of the mixed principle,
  • Displacement of a large proportion of the employee user group to private (generally existing) parking facilities,
  • Reclaiming traffic areas for pedestrians and recreational areas by reducing the number of parking spaces,
  • Integration of alternative mobility options (bicycle parking facilities, e-charging stations, car sharing, etc.),
  • Increasing road safety

Afterwards, participants will be able to ask questions and make suggestions to the employees of the expert office and the city administration.

Online participation and next steps

After the event, the presentation will be published online via the city's participation portal  www.bonn-macht-mit.de. All citizens can submit their suggestions on the parking concept there for 14 days - from Tuesday, March 21 to Tuesday, April 7, 2023.

Based on the results of the study and taking into account the suggestions made by citizens, the administration will then prepare a proposal for the Bonn district council, which will make the final decision on the implementation of the parking concept.
