The project is part of the Innere Stadt master plan for the future development of Bonn's city center. As part of the project, the street space is to be upgraded and the connection between the city center and the Rhine improved. In March 2024, the Bonn City Council defined the initial key points of the future plans: In future, motor vehicle traffic in Rheingasse will only flow from the Rhine towards the city center. This means that one lane can be dispensed with and there will be greater scope for designing the space in terms of traffic requirements and the quality of stay and climate. The specific questions regarding the division, design and furnishing of the space are to be discussed as part of the participation process.

The city of Bonn is therefore offering various opportunities for participation:

• On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, from 4:30 pm, the administration will inform children and young people about the planning status in the opera house (rehearsal stage 1), side entrance, and collect suggestions for the further planning process and the design of Rheingasse.
• On Thursday, June 13, 2024, from 6 p.m. in the rehearsal stage of the Opera House, Am Boeselagerhof 1 (side entrance), information will be provided on the current planning status and suggestions will be collected for the further planning process and the design of Rheingasse. The city is writing to 750 randomly selected adults and 150 young people.
• From Bonn, June 13, up to and including Sunday, June 30, 2024, citizens will be able to submit suggestions and wishes via the digital participation platform  www.bonn-macht-mit.de (opens in a new tab).
• On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, representatives of the administration and the city of Bonn's city center management will seek a dialogue with the businesses located in Rheingasse.

The administration will compile the comments, suggestions and proposals from citizens in a document and then examine their usefulness and feasibility. Following this review, the suggestions will be incorporated into the upcoming planning of the street.

Based on the specifications from the council resolution of March 2024 and taking into account the results of the public participation, the administration will carry out further planning. In September 2024, a basic concept for the redesign of Rheingasse is to be presented to the Council for approval.
