City of Bonn

Tree concept adopted by the council

On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the city council adopted Bonn's urban tree concept. With this, the city of Bonn aims to further develop its tree population and - where possible - plant more street trees for future generations. New locations are to be created, particularly in densely populated districts where there are currently only a few trees.

On behalf of the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery, a specialist office has investigated in which districts the need for new tree locations is particularly great and in which streets additional planting could be possible. Various criteria were taken into account - such as the climatic situation in the districts, the population density and the sealed surface area. The result of the expert office: The need is particularly great in eleven districts - 800 new tree locations could be created here in the future.

Initial proposals for new locations can be found in the tree concept that has now been adopted. However, findings from other cities that are already working on the implementation of comparable concepts show that, for various reasons, only a small percentage of the potential sites can actually be planted with trees. This is because the new tree locations must meet high standards so that the planted trees thrive and remain vital for as long as possible.

Irrigation technology also plays an important role in the detailed planning of new tree locations: according to the sponge city principle, the tree grates should be laid out in such a way that as much rainwater as possible can be absorbed and benefit the trees.

A street cross-section that is too narrow or a disruptive gas pipeline are generally exclusion criteria for sustainable tree planting. High parking pressure in the neighborhood is also taken into account in the tree concept. Nevertheless, parking areas that are sealed today also offer the opportunity to create new tree locations there in the future and thus increase the quality of life in the neighborhood. Each planting will be carefully weighed up and decided on a case-by-case basis.

The city administration will now first examine ten sample streets in neighborhoods with special needs to determine whether and how many new tree locations can be realized there: Insterburgerstraße in Auerberg, Maarstraße in Beuel-Ost, Weierbornstraße in Beuel-Mitte, Schieffelingsweg in Neu-Duisdorf, Vorgebirgsstraße in Ellerviertel, Immenburgstraße in Bonn-Güterbahnhof, Honnefer Straße in Lannesdorf, Deutschherrenstraße and Röntgenstraße in Pennenfeld, Bennauerstraße in Poppelsdorf. The district councils will make the final decision on the specific plans for tree locations.
