Bonn athletes honored for their successes in 2022

On Thursday evening, June 1, 2023, Mayor Katja Dörner honored more than 100 top, junior and senior athletes for their sporting successes in the past year. The traditional sports awards ceremony, which had previously taken place in the Old Town Hall, was redesigned this year by the City of Bonn's Sports and Bathing Department and took place for the first time in the form of a gala with the support of Deutsche Telekom AG in the Telekom Forum.

A total of 201 athletes from Bonn were invited to the award ceremony. Most of them accepted the Mayor of Bonn's invitation and received their certificates in person. The athletes won titles in the following sports: badminton, baseball, basketball, biathletics, fencing, floorball, handbiking, jahnkampf, judo, canoeing, canoe slalom, laser run, para-cycling, quidditch, roller figure skating, roundnet, rowing, chess, swimming, softball, taekwondo, dancing, triathletics and triathlon. Some athletes were unable to attend as they were away due to competitions or were preparing for them.

Mayor of Bonn Dörner warmly congratulated the athletes: "I am delighted to be able to honor more than 100 Bonn athletes today. That is a number we can be proud of. It also shows how diverse sport is in our city. Our aim is to promote recreational, competitive, elite and school sport," she emphasized. The city of Bonn therefore provides sports clubs with around 1.6 million euros in funding every year.

Katja Dörner also thanked the club chairpersons, coaches, trainers and officials: "Your work helps to ensure that athletes can train in good conditions. Clubs are more important than ever for urban society - as places of social cohesion and as training camps for democracy."

Cultural and sporting supporting program

The cultural and sporting program was provided by the Ballet School International, the children's and youth choir of Theater Bonn, the roller skating department of SC Fortuna Bonn, the Telekom Baskets dance team, pianist Theo Palm with singer Anna Fischer and Tanzhaus Bonn. The Behinderten-Gemeinschaft Bonn supported the event with Managing Director Marion Frohn and several inclusive helpers. The Sparkasse KölnBonn Sports Foundation presented a cheque to the actors responsible for the program contributions. Guests at the Telekom Forum included members of the NRW state parliament, the Bundestag, members of the sports committee and representatives of the Bonn City Sports Association.

Bonn sport in figures

Around 80,000 people in Bonn are organized in 374 sports clubs and company sports associations. Almost a quarter do sport regularly. The most popular sport is soccer with around 13,000 members. In addition, many citizens are active in sports outside the clubs, for example at the free "Sport in the Park" offer initiated by the Stadtsportbund Bonn together with the City of Bonn, SWB Energie und Wasser and Barmer GEK.
