City of Bonn

Wild boar enclosure at the Waldau is being rebuilt

There will be no wild boars to be seen in the show enclosure at Waldau until the fall of 2025. The city is rebuilding the enclosure because the area has been permanently wet for more than a year and is no longer drying out.

Due to the constant wet conditions, the flock suffered from recurring and - despite multiple treatments - persistent worm infections. In view of the poor health and animal welfare, all eight animals had to be killed.

In order to improve the situation permanently, the city will treat the soil and continue the renovation of the site. The enclosure was rebuilt last year so that the wild boars can alternate between two separate areas in future. The advantage of this is that the ground can dry out and regenerate in the unused section. A feeding platform and another shelter will also be built.

The city plans to take in wild boar from other gates in the fall and build up a new population in order to continue to show native game at Waldau.

The red deer and fallow deer enclosures are not affected by the renovation work. The animals can still be visited and fed from the feeders.
