For years, the number of parents of children in Bonn with identified special educational needs who would like their child to attend a mainstream school with joint learning has been increasing. In order to be able to meet this demand in Röttgen, the Bonn City Council agreed at its meeting on February 13, 2025 to enable so-called joint learning for pupils with and without special educational needs at a further school. The Catholic elementary school Schlossbachschule will introduce joint learning for the 2025/2026 school year.
The lower school supervisory authority of the Cologne district government had named the Schlossbachschule and asked the city of Bonn for approval. The Schlossbachschule school conference gave its approval at the beginning of January 2025. The council resolution was followed by the approval of the school authority. The decision was taken at short notice by means of an emergency decision, as time was of the essence due to internal administrative and school processes and the need to create planning certainty for interested parents of children with identified special educational needs.
The expansion of joint learning is an important step in the inclusion process for children with and without disabilities. General education schools in Bonn have been offering joint learning for many years. In the current school year, there are 31 elementary school and 20 secondary schools.
