Fourth Bonn elementary school sets up temporary school street

Schools in Bonn have been able to set up temporary school streets since the fall of 2023. At the end of February 2024, the Paul-Gerhardt-Schule in the center of Beuel will be the fourth elementary school to increase the safety of its schoolchildren in traffic, while the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has issued a decree providing a legal framework for the establishment of temporary school streets and pick-up and drop-off zones.

The school road in Neustraße is set up with a barrier beacon and a "residents free" sign in the morning before school starts at Paul-Gerhardt-Schule.

At the end of September 2023, Om Berg elementary school (Holzlar) and Marktschule elementary school (Pützchen) began setting up temporary school streets as part of a pilot project by the City of Bonn. Gottfried Kinkel Primary School (Oberkassel) has since joined in, and now Paul Gerhardt School is also taking part. With the help of committed parents and teachers, only authorized traffic is permitted on the access road by means of mobile barrier beacons. This significantly reduces the volume of traffic in front of the school. The school will receive a special permit from the city council to set up the temporary school road.

Mayor Katja Dörner of Bonn: "We want every child to be able to get to school safely and independently. The well-intentioned parent cabs often lead to dangerous situations. The experiences at the three schools, Marktschule, Grundschule Om Berg and Gottfried-Kinkel-Schule, which have already set up school streets, have been consistently positive. This shows that we are pulling the right lever here. Being able to make their own way to school is an important experience for our children, which helps them grow and gives them self-confidence. "

Despite the establishment of the temporary school streets, residents and their visitors will still be able to drive through. The city administration will issue authorization cards or permits for this purpose. Residents can also pass through on presentation of their identity card, on which the current registration address in the closed street is noted.

According to the decree of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the establishment of a school street "primarily serves the traffic safety of school children". It can be created as part of an event, as has been practiced in Bonn since autumn 2023, using mobile barrier elements, for example. Or the school road can be set up permanently with traffic signs.

The city administration hopes that other elementary school will set up temporary school streets to reduce the amount of traffic parents have to pick up and drop off children. If interested, schools can contact  verkehrslenkungbonnde
