Work to dismantle the Kurfürstenbad starts on February 16

The demolition of the Kurfürstenbad can begin. Following the public tender, the company Wahl Abbruch GmbH was commissioned with the work. The next steps for the new building are also being taken in parallel.

At a press event on Thursday, 15 February 2024, Mayor Katja Dörner, Head of the Sports and Culture Department Dr. Birgit Schneider-Bönninger, Head of the Sports and Baths Department Stefan Günther, project manager Wolfgang Ziegert and the managing director of the demolition company Wahl, Thomas Vollmar, provided information on the current status and the demolition work that is now set to begin.

The commissioned demolition company will begin work in the Kurfürstenbad as early as Friday, February 16. First, the rooms will be gutted, then pollutants will be removed before the building is completely demolished - the removal of the Paul Magar mosaic "Cheerful Day by the Water" will be a particularly exciting undertaking. The mosaic is to be cut out of the concrete in two parts and then stored in a container until it is reinstalled. The removal is currently planned for the second quarter of 2024.

"The go-ahead has been given for the dismantling. I am delighted that it is now getting underway. Following the planning concept approved last September, this is the second major milestone for the Kurfürstenbad project and excellent news for Bonn's pool landscape and Bad Godesberg. We are currently on schedule and within budget. It will also be possible to commission a total contractor for the new building," said Mayor Katja Dörner.

As decided by the Bad Godesberg district council on September 6, 2023, the administration had carried out a public procurement law review of a total contractor award (TU award). The result of the review confirms the permissibility of implementing the new building as part of such a TU award. The preparatory measures for this Europe-wide award procedure have already begun.

New and modern Kurfürstenbad with renewable energies

The spatial program of the new Kurfürstenbad includes a teaching pool, a sports pool with diving boards (one-metre and three-metre boards), a children's pool, a multifunctional pool with a lifting floor, a sauna area measuring approx. 330 square metres with a Finnish sauna, steam bath, infrared sauna, sauna relaxation room and outdoor sauna area as well as sanitary, social and ancillary rooms.

The focus is on the optimized and sustainable use of resources:

  • Minimization of the building's energy requirements
  • Optimal use of heat recovery systems
  • Use of heat pumps and solar panels for energy supply
  • Exclusive use of renewable energies for residual energy requirements

The entire roof area is to be extensively greened and equipped with a photovoltaic system. Measures will be taken to protect all glass surfaces from bird strikes.

Subject to further planning and implementation, construction of the new Kurfürstenbad is expected to be completed around mid-2027.
