City of Bonn

Tourism vision 2030 for Bonn

The Bonn City Council approves the tourism mission statement. Together with stakeholders from politics and tourism, Bonn-Information at the Office for Economic Development has worked out how the City of Bonn can further sharpen its tourism profile.

The city of Bonn's tourism vision has been adopted. In its most recent meeting, the council voted in favor of the tourism vision for the year 2030, which was developed together with stakeholders from politics and tourism and supported by the dwif agency. It defines goals, fields of action, key topics and target groups.

"With the resolution, we can now move on to implementation and work out in concrete terms how we can further develop Bonn's special qualities. I am convinced that our beautiful city still has a lot of potential that we should exploit," says Mayor Katja Dörner. "The tourism mission statement makes it clear why it is worth promoting strong tourism in Bonn and the region and raising our profile in a demanding travel market," she continued.

Gross turnover in Bonn's tourism sector amounted to around 1.3 billion euros in 2019. This sum shows the enormous economic importance of the industry for the city. Almost all sectors of the economy benefit from tourism, above all the hospitality industry with accommodation and gastronomy as well as retail.

The process participants have prioritized "Cultural and Authentic Bonn", "Beethoven's Bonn" and "Political Bonn", especially with its post-war German history, as key themes for tourism profiling in the leisure sector. "Nature" and "Active along the Rhine" as well as the "Fairytale Siebengebirge" were defined as common themes for Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district.

The themes "UN City" and "World Cultural Heritage Lower German Limes" are to be developed more intensively. To this end, specific showcase products are to be developed before marketing can begin. Showcase products include, for example, guided tours on the topic or a visit to a museum. This allows a tourism theme to be visualized and actually experienced on site.

The focus here should be on the motto "less is more", as it is primarily about what is special, not necessarily about variety. The mission statement also focuses on the target groups - of particular interest to Bonn is the so-called "post-material milieu". This refers to people from the upper middle and upper classes who have a very high level of education and value self-determination and self-development.

In future, the Bonn-Information, T&C and other tourism service providers will develop their offers and products accordingly. Bonn is thus also following the tourism strategy of the state of NRW.
