The number of children with intellectual development needs has been increasing for years. The demand for these school places at special schools is also very high in Bonn - regardless of the "joint learning" provision at mainstream schools - as the support needs of these children are often very complex. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand, the council has now decided, on the recommendation of the administration, to convert the previous partial location of the Königin-Juliana-Schule in Buschdorf (Bonn district) into an independent school location with a focus on "intellectual development".

Since the 2021/2022 school year, the special school in Buschdorf on Schlesienstraße has been operating as a branch of the Königin Juliana School in a modular building ("container building"). This is now being expanded to include further modules. Currently, 78 pupils attend this facility and a further 152 children and young people attend the main Medinghoven site.

Even though the Buschdorf school site has been run as a sub-site of the Königin Juliana School to date, it now effectively forms its own school site in terms of the number of pupils attending and the organizational framework conditions. In order to be better positioned in terms of organization, education and staffing, the previous interim location in Buschdorf, which is also a branch of the Königin Juliana School, will therefore be converted into an independent special school location from the start of the 2025/2026 school year.

In the medium term, the Buschdorf school site is to move to the new  special school (opens in a new tab) for "intellectual development" in Beuel on Rölsdorfstraße, which is yet to be built. The space allocation plan for the special education center was developed jointly by the education authority, municipal building management and members of the management and staff of the Königin Juliana School. The Buschdorf location will then be abandoned in the future.
