City of Bonn

210,000 euros from the federal government for near-natural green space management in the Rheinaue floodplain

The city of Bonn is receiving around 210,000 euros in federal funding from the "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities" program for near-natural green space management in selected areas of the Rheinaue.

In view of the Rheinaue's 50th anniversary in 2029, the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery is planning to have a comprehensive park maintenance plan drawn up. This should form the basis for preserving the listed park for future generations. In addition to the repair and revision of individual areas, the conversion to near-natural green space management in selected areas is a further component of the planned maintenance work. Individual areas, such as the dog meadow and orchard, are already being maintained in accordance with species conservation principles. The decisive advantage of near-natural maintenance is that it contributes to increasing biodiversity and climate resilience.

Urban nature is one of the three pillars of the city of Bonn's biodiversity concept. For its efforts to date to promote biodiversity, the federal city was awarded the "Stadtgrün naturnah" label in gold in 2023. Further information can be found at  www.bonn.de/stadtgruen-naturnah.
