City of Bonn

Cycle path service team explains its work to city leaders

In the future, cycling should account for 25 percent of all traffic in Bonn. In order to achieve this goal, the city is focusing, among other things, on expanding a safe and attractive cycle path network; the existing cycle path connections should also be safe. Ensuring this is the task of the cycle path service team set up at the City of Bonn's Civil Engineering Department in summer 2023.

Mayor Katja Dörner and Helmut Wiesner, head of the city's transport department, had their tasks explained to them by the two members of the cycle path service team, Dariusz Kozlewicz and Markus Bung. On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, they were out and about together on cycle paths and cycle lanes in the inner Nordstadt.

The team's task is to monitor damage and defects on cycle paths throughout the city. For example, missing markings or pictograms, damaged signage as well as defects in the surface of the paths are recorded and forwarded to the teams responsible for repairs at the Civil Engineering Department.

"Thank you for taking on this important task," said the Mayor of Bonn. "Just like the team at the Civil Engineering Office, which continuously monitors the condition of the roads, you keep a watchful eye on the cycling facilities. We need well-developed, attractive and, above all, safe cycle path connections so that even more people switch to cycling," emphasized Katja Dörner.

"In addition to the expansion of additional cycle path connections to close gaps in the cycling network, safety on existing cycle paths plays an important role. Seemingly "small things", such as filling in a cracked surface layer or replacing a sign, can easily prevent danger and uncertainty for all road users," added city planning officer Helmut Wiesner. "We are delighted that our cycle path service team has now started its work!"

Report defects online

Citizens also have the opportunity to draw the city administration's attention to a defect on the cycle paths. The City of Bonn's defect reporter is available for this purpose. For example, green overgrowth, defective road signs or damage to the cycle path surface can be reported at  https://anliegen.bonn.de (opens in a new tab).

Comprehensive information on the subject of cycling can be found on the city's website at  https://www.bonn.de/radverkehr. (opens in a new tab)
