Expression of interest procedure for "Rhine in Flames"

At its meeting on Thursday, April 27, 2023, the Council approved an expression of interest procedure for "Rhine in Flames". There are also to be fireworks or comparable illuminations at the end of the event in the years 2024 to 2026.

The organizer contract for the land event of the major event in Bonn's Rheinaue will expire in 2023 after being extended due to coronavirus. A new host for the years 2024 to 2026 is therefore being sought through an expression of interest procedure.

The aim is also to enable a new, more sustainable format with a higher-quality focus for the popular event. In addition to an attractive main stage with a high-quality program, there should also be a diverse and regional range of food and drink. Proposals that incorporate the banks of the Rhine and the city center into the event are also welcome.

Applicants can also submit a concept for the boat convoy that will take place during "Rhine in Flames". It should ideally be organized again with the participation of the neighbouring municipalities as far as Remagen.

In order to reduce CO2 emissions and particulate pollution, the fireworks displays during "Rhine in Flames" are to be reduced and expanded to include sustainable and modern productions such as light shows. Plastic materials are to be largely dispensed with in the final, music-synchronized fireworks display and recycled materials used instead. The fireworks are also to be noise-reduced.

An expression of interest procedure is a concession award procedure that is not subject to formal award criteria. Once the applications have been received, they are examined by a committee made up of employees from various municipal departments, which is still to be set up. After a round of interviews, the panel will decide which applicant will be awarded the contract.

Offers will be accepted until June 1, 2023. Further information:  www.bonn.de/auslobung-rhein-in-flammen.
