Robert and Clara Schumann in the International Children's Book

9.3.2016 to 22.5.2016 in the Ernst Moritz Arndt House

A portrait of Robert and Clara Schumann

There is a lot to tell about the artist couple Robert and Clara Schumann. Not only because they were both among the most important musical personalities of the 19th century, but also because their life stories are particularly interesting, fateful and multifaceted.

Through their diaries and letters, so much is known about their lives, thoughts and feelings that their shared history seems to be very close, as if we were witnessing it. And it is as exciting as a good book. This is also the reason why there are so many books about Robert and Clara Schumann.

Children's and young adult literature all over the world takes up their life story and depicts it from a wide variety of perspectives in picture books, young adult novels, magazines, comic books and children's non-fiction books.

The exhibition presented some of the many different children's and young adult books and showed how differently each of them approaches the depiction of biographical facts. Books from all over the world - from Europe, the USA, Latin America and South East Asia - were presented from the collections of the Robert Schumann Research Center in Düsseldorf and a private collection from Krefeld.
