Overview
In North Rhine-Westphalia, a coordinated admission procedure is carried out for the transition from year 4 of elementary school to secondary general education schools.
The aim of the coordinated admission procedure is to avoid double and multiple registrations. For this purpose, a registration form is issued to the legal guardians of each child by the elementary school together with the half-year report card for year 4. Parents/guardians use this registration form to register their children at a secondary school of their choice. Each child can only be registered at one school. Independent schools (Ersatzschulen) in Bonn also participate in this procedure. Please note that the registration periods for independent schools may differ from the registration periods for municipal schools.
Registration periods for the various types of schools in Bonn for the 2025/2026 school year:
The following registration periods have been set for the registration process for lower secondary level for the 2025/2026 school year for the municipal secondary schools in Bonn:
Comprehensive schools:
Friday, February 7, 2025 to Friday, February 14, 2025, 1 p.m.
Hauptschulen, municipal secondary modern schools and grammar schools:
Monday, February 24, 2025 to Friday, March 14, 2025, 1:00 p.m.
Procedure for regular pupils
The schools will only decide on admission after the end of the standard application period. If the school is able to admit your child, it will keep the original registration form. You will receive confirmation of admission from the school. If the school is unable to accept your child, you will receive a written rejection from the school. At the same time, the original registration form will be returned to you with the rejection. The rejection letter will also inform you of other schools in the desired school type where places are still available. You can then use the registration form to register your child at one of these schools or try to find a place at another school yourself.
Procedure for children with special educational needs:
The above deadlines also apply in principle to the admission of children with special educational needs to schools with joint learning. As a parent, you will receive a separate letter from your elementary school containing the schools closest to your child's place of residence for the different types of schools with joint learning and a list of the special schools in the lower secondary level.
Parents/guardians of fourth graders will receive detailed information on the registration process in December via their child's "Ranzenpost".
Open days
Open days will be held at the municipal schools. Please check the websites of the schools you and your children are interested in to find out when and in what form the open day will take place. Alternatively, you can find a summary of all open days at lower secondary schools reported to the education authority under "Information events at secondary schools in Bonn" and "Forms and links".
