The area around the main railway station is being developed bit by bit. In recent years, the so-called "Bonn Hole" has already disappeared and Rabinstraße has been renovated. In addition to the construction of the new bus station, the street "Am Hauptbahnhof" is also being renovated and improved. In concrete terms, this means
- The sidewalks will be wider and easier to use. Because today there are always obstacles on the often narrow sidewalks. It will also be ensured that the kerbs are lowered at all crossings.
- The streetcar stops will be enlarged and made barrier-free.
- Safe cycle paths will be created for bicycles on both sides next to the streetcar tracks.
- Trees will be planted in front of the new buildings on the north side.
- The cobblestones in the northern underpass will be replaced by asphalt - a comfort gain for bus, bicycle and cab traffic.
- At the Rabinstraße/Thomas-Mann-Straße junction, a covered bicycle parking area for 140 bicycles will be created at the bridge to track 1. The spiral staircase to the northern underpass will be replaced by a straight staircase with a bicycle sliding system.
As the tracks will be moved towards the city - albeit only by a few meters - for the conversion, a planning approval procedure is required before construction can begin. This planning procedure is complex, which is why the planning has already taken several years. Nevertheless, they are already well advanced.
The city administration is currently only waiting for the final completion of the planning approval procedure by the Cologne district government. After that, the conversion can begin.
