Lines 66 and 67 are popular. More and more passengers are using the trains to get to school, work or the Siegburg/Bonn ICE train station, for example. From 2026, a train will run every five minutes between Siegburg and Bonn.
The route will become even more attractive in future: a new tower station is being built in Bonn-Vilich, where passengers will be able to board the S13 S-Bahn directly from the light rail. Deutsche Bahn is currently expanding the line from two tracks to three or four tracks. The S13 trains will then stop directly below the new light rail station.
New, modern light rail vehicles have already been ordered to enable this fast cycle. The Spanish manufacturer CAF will deliver these to Bonn in the coming years. As a result, there will be enough light rail vehicles available so that a train can run along the route every five minutes.
To ensure that this happens on time, the city administration is working on eliminating a bottleneck. On St. Augustiner Straße, the light rail system now runs between Königswinterer Straße and Combahnstraße, i.e. at the level of the Combahn quarter with the cars on the roadway. This means that the light rail is stuck in traffic jams in the evening and is often delayed as a result. Over the next few years, the city council will be upgrading the road so that the light rail can run on its own tracks between the carriageway ordered to enable this fast cycle. The conversion will take a relatively long time, as the city council first has to buy up private land.
