Bonn has been able to call itself a UN city since July 1996. Ten years later, in July 2006, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel was able to hand over the new United Nations headquarters in Bonn to the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The German government had invested 55 million euros in the conversion of the former parliamentary tower, also known as "Langer Eugen". Almost all UN organizations in Bonn work there under one roof.
In October 2012, another building complex was handed over to the United Nations in the form of the Old Parliamentary Tower, where employees of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat work. In order to meet the growing space requirements of the United Nations in Bonn, another building is currently being constructed on the UN Campus.
Today, the UN Campus offers the United Nations in Bonn ideal working conditions and a synergy-rich environment with many national contacts and a wide range of internationally active partners on site.
