Tree 9: Robinia

  • Robinia pseudoacacia
  • North America, southern Mexico

Genus

Robinia: Name dedicated in honor of Jean Robin (1550 - 1629), royal gardener to Henri IV and Louis XIII of France and his son Vespasian Robin, who was the first to plant this tree in Europe.

Deciduous, medium-sized to large trees or shrubs, up to 25 meters high and 20 meters wide, also multi-stemmed with a round, spreading, later umbrella-like crown and irregular branch structure.

The genus includes 20 species in North America and Mexico with different sizes and shapes and in clusters of flowers in various colors (white, pink or purple), spreading a sweet fragrance.

The robinia is vigorous, has a strong root system and is therefore considered a pioneer and industrial tree for reinforcing slopes, embankments and banks. Due to its high climate tolerance and drought resistance, it is an option as a park, garden, street and landscape tree.
