City of Bonn

The Bonn tree concept

In view of the climate crisis and increasing periods of heat, the city of Bonn wants to further develop its tree population and plant more street trees for future generations. To this end, the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery has drawn up a tree concept that shows how this can be done.

With the tree concept, the city aims to further develop the tree population in Bonn in a targeted manner. New locations are to be created, particularly in neighborhoods where there are currently only a few trees. To this end, a specialist office was commissioned to examine the entire city area on the basis of various criteria - including settlement and population density, the climatic situation in the neighborhood and the number of treeless streets in the statistical districts.

The study shows: There are currently no trees on around 540 streets in Bonn - that's around a quarter of all streets in the city. Eleven districts were identified that would particularly benefit from additional tree planting - these include (from north to south) Auerberg, Neu-Tannenbusch, Beuel-Ost, the Ellerviertel, Bonn-Güterbahnhof, Poppelsdorf, Neu-Duisdorf, Duisdorf-Mitte, Bad-Godesberg Zentrum, Pennenfeld and Lannesdorf. Almost 800 new locations for street trees could be created in these eleven districts alone in the future.
