IoT sensors in the city of Bonn

In the newly emerging Urban Data Platform(UDP), sensor data from the Internet of things (IoT) can be integrated, interpreted and correlated with the existing data in addition to the existing data from the geo-information system.

But what are the benefits of sensor data?

Sensor data can provide data in real time.

The use cases for this are diverse: for example, fill level indicators for glass containers, weather and traffic data can be recorded using sensors. The data from the individual sensors can be "collected" via LoRaWan.

LoRaWan is a sensor technology. LoRaWan stands for long Range, wide area Network,, which translates as: low energy consumption, long range.

In Bonn, a distinction can be made between two LoRaWan networks. The public network is available to everyone. Anyone can integrate their private sensors into this network. The infrastructure is being built by the city and SWB. The second network is an internal City of Bonn network. This means that you cannot simply dial in with any sensor. This network is used for the sensors of SWB and the city in order to comply with data protection regulations.

In the further development of the Urban Data Platform (UDP), the data from the internal network will be displayed first. The metadata for this data is known. In the further development, data from private individuals can also be integrated, which will then also be identified as such.
