People who are dependent on alcohol, medication or illegal addictive substances often experience serious consequences as a result of their illness: Social relationships, including family ties, can be significantly impaired or even break down, jobs can be at risk or lost, and it is not uncommon for people to lose their homes. In addition, there are often accompanying and secondary physical illnesses.
