As a general rule, children of primary school age should not be sent to school unaccompanied by bicycle. Even if the child can ride safely in their familiar home environment, they are not yet fully up to the demands of road traffic on the generally longer journey to school.

Safe participation in road traffic on a bicycle requires that the bicycle can be moved safely, that rules are known and that a certain amount of traffic experience is available. Children will not meet these requirements until they have passed their cycling test in their fourth year at the earliest.

As part of the "More space for children - a win-win situation for everyone" campaign, the city of Bonn developed a guide to setting up pick-up and drop-off zones at Bonn schools in April 2018 together with the Bonn police, the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg German Cyclists' Association (ADFC) and other institutions.

It is intended to help schools if they want to set up special zones in which parents bring their children to and from school by car. The rest of the way to school should offer a high level of safety so that nobody has to drive right up to the classroom.

Children who, for various reasons, are unable to make the entire journey to school on their own will have the opportunity to get some exercise and benefit from social contact along the way. The pick-up and drop-off zones can become meeting points for pupils, from where they can walk the rest of the way to school together.

At the same time, the pick-up and drop-off zones around the schools create new areas that are kept free of excessive traffic. Children who already come to school on foot, by bike or by bus and train should also have a safer route to school.
