Seven more solar systems on municipal buildings connected to the grid

Solar expansion on municipal buildings continues to gather pace: since the framework agreement with Stadtwerke Bonn was signed at the beginning of June 2024, the next seven larger systems have been installed.

A PV system in combination with a green roof was installed on the new building of the Kita in Limperich Strasse.

The systems on the Bonns Fünfte comprehensive school (66 kilowatt peak, kWp for short), on the sports hall in Wittestraße (51 kWp) and on the new building at Kita Limperich Straße 122b (32 kWp) are new to the grid. The systems on the roofs of the Am Domhof Kita and Catholic elementary school (100 kWp in total), the Carl-Schurz-Schule (90 kWp), the Weinheimstraße Kita (46 kWp) and the Karl-Simrock-Schule (38 kWp) will be connected shortly. The roofs of the two Kita buildings were covered with PV systems in combination with green roofs.

The system on the Bonn Fünfte comprehensive school has an output of 66 kWp.
A solar system with an output of 51 kWp was installed on the Wittestraße gymnasium.

The electricity generated by the PV systems is mainly used in the buildings themselves to supply electricity, which - depending on use - can cover a large proportion of the energy required. Any surplus is fed into the public grid.

By way of comparison, the average electricity requirement of a single-family home with a four-person household is between 4,000 and 5,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year. A PV system with an output of 100 kWp generates an average of around 100,000 kWh of electricity per year from solar energy, enough to cover the electricity requirements of 20 to 25 single-family homes. The seven new PV systems can therefore cover the annual electricity consumption of around 100 single-family homes.

Background

In order to accelerate the expansion of PV on municipal properties, the city recently concluded a framework agreement with SWB Energie und Wasser. The framework agreement provides for a lease model: The municipal building management checks the roofs - for example, for roof statics and roof tightness. If the roof does not need to be renovated first, but is "PV ready", it is leased to the municipal utilities. Stadtwerke then installs and operates a photovoltaic system on it and supplies climate-friendly and cost-effective solar power to the municipal buildings. Stadtwerke feeds the surplus electricity from the photovoltaic systems into the public electricity grid. Currently, 300 municipal buildings are being tested for their PV suitability as part of a feasibility study.

The city's PV offensive is part of Bonn's Climate Plan 2035, which was adopted by the city council in March 2023 as a roadmap for a climate-neutral city worth living in. Further information on Bonn's climate plan can be found at  www.bonn.de/klimaplan. (opens in a new tab)
