Planned residential area Wilhelm-Flohe-Straße: jury selects competition winner

Another important step towards the urban development of the municipal area on Wilhelm-Flohe-Straße in the Pützchen/Bechlinghoven district of Beuel has been achieved: at the jury meeting on October 11, 2024, the winning design for the future layout of the area was chosen, which will form the basis for the upcoming development plan procedure.

The general plan shows the 0.7-hectare site on Wilhelm-Flohe-Strasse with several buildings.

After extensive deliberation, the jury decided in favor of the design by the Machleidt Städtebau + Stadtplanung team with A24 Landschaft, which impressed with its well thought-out and robust concept. This design offers great potential - both for further planning and the subsequent implementation phase. Petra Denny, Head of the Urban Planning Office of the City of Bonn, was very satisfied with the result and emphasized the great importance of the competition process for the quality assurance of the designs and finding the best planning solution.

The winning design

In the jury's opinion, the design creates a clear spatial setting to the surrounding streetscapes while at the same time creating generous openings to the open space. In its location and in conjunction with the well-placed daycare center, a neighborhood square forms the interface between the neighborhood, existing neighborhood, new neighborhood and cemetery. The spacious outdoor daycare area also allows for the preservation and integration of the existing fruit trees. The alignment of the buildings with the surrounding streets enables the development of generous, contiguous private and semi-public open spaces. The jury praised the good use of the plot with a compatible storey height of three to four storeys. The division into several individual building plots promises good sectional feasibility, which is also able to integrate different residential typologies and architectures of the individual components. Parking will be provided in an underground garage in the northern part of the site along Wilhelm-Flohe-Strasse.

Results exhibited in the City Hall

The results of the competition will be exhibited in the foyer of the City Hall, Berliner Platz 2, from October 16 to October 30, 2024 inclusive. The exhibition can be viewed during opening hours from Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm and on Fridays from 8 am to 1 pm.

Background

The City of Bonn launched an urban and landscape planning competition in accordance with the guidelines for planning competitions (RPW 2013) for the approximately 0.7-hectare former cemetery expansion area, which is bordered by Wilhelm-Flohe-Straße and Siegburger Straße. The aim was to obtain a pioneering urban design for a residential development and thus meet the need for affordable housing in Bonn. Furthermore, the urban development concept was to respond appropriately to the adjacent buildings, take into account a new location for a daycare center and at the same time meet the high requirements for sustainable urban development (in the sense of multiple inner development).

A total of eight planning teams, consisting of one urban planning office and one landscape architecture office, took part in the process to develop creative and innovative solutions for the plan area. The jury, which was made up of external experts, politicians and representatives of the City of Bonn, evaluated the submitted designs in terms of their urban planning and landscape planning qualities, as well as their integration into the surrounding area.
