The report summarizes progress and developments in the field of cultural diversity between 2020 and 2023 and uses over 100 examples to show how Germany promotes cultural diversity nationally and internationally. It highlights the participatory involvement in the continuation of Bonn's cultural concept by the Coordination Office for Culture and Sustainability, which brought together representatives from the fields of art, culture, sport and sustainability to jointly develop the strategy.
"It is an outstanding achievement that Bonn is listed as a good example in the UNESCO State Report with the development of the new, sustainable cultural strategy. Our goal is for Bonn to become climate-neutral by 2035. To achieve this, it is important that we continue to work together in all areas, including culture, to achieve this goal," says Mayor Katja Dörner.
"Sustainability is a team sport and can only succeed together. That's why it was important to us from the outset to involve so many players from the fields of culture, sport and sustainability in the process for Bonn's sustainable cultural strategy. I am therefore all the more pleased that it has been included in the fourth state report due to its participatory approach," says Birgit Schneider-Bönninger, Head of the Department of Sport and Culture.
The "Sustainable Cultural Strategy of the City of Bonn 2035" was developed between 2021 and 2024. A total of 550 people - including a large number of multiple participants - from around 130 organizations took part in 14 different events within the strategy process (including a survey and kick-off event). A participatory and open-ended strategy process was designed under the slogan "more colorful. more active. more aware". The associated goal is to create a robust framework for a future-proof and sustainable cultural and sports landscape in Bonn. The strategy process and the resulting measures are based on five of the 17 SDGs as well as the broad participation and active involvement of numerous interdisciplinary stakeholders. Publication of the strategy is planned for late summer 2024.

Unesco State Report
The presentation of the State Report is jointly organized by the Federal Foreign Office, the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and the German Unesco Commission. The focus is on approaches for action for Germany's cultural and social policy in the coming years.
The State Report is published every four years to review the progress of the Convention by 155 states and the European Union. On the one hand, the states committed themselves to creating a stable, institutional environment and fair framework conditions for artistic production and creativity while respecting artistic freedom and gender equality. On the other hand, the widest possible dissemination of art and culture is to be ensured in order to enable access to cultural goods and services for all people. This year's report focused primarily on sustainable transformation in the cultural sector.
