The first step towards an urban development company has been taken. At its most recent meeting, the council voted in favor of the administration now entering into talks with Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB GmbH), as the council resolution envisages them as co-shareholders. Synergies are seen between the future activities of the new company and Stadtwerke, for example in the realization of development-related projects and the development of construction areas. Stadtwerke can also provide assistance with commercial services, particularly in the initial phase.
By founding an urban development company, the City Group is creating a unit that is able to provide impetus for urban development by developing land and existing buildings, over and above land-use planning and contractual requirements. "We are thus expanding the toolbox for active urban development," says Mayor Katja Dörner, "we need more affordable housing, so I am pleased that we can now take this important step to advance the structural development of our city in a positive and sustainable way," she continues.
"With the urban development company, we want to ensure the economic, sustainable and climate-friendly development of properties. The city and Stadtwerke agree that this is the right way to create sustainable, climate-friendly and barrier-free residential and commercial space in Bonn," adds SWB CEO Olaf Hermes.
The company is to develop properties already owned by the city on behalf of the city, but also purchase suitable properties as part of a "land reserve policy". In the future, the company should also be able to support the energy-efficient refurbishment of neighborhoods as part of the climate plan.
