In areas that were previously blocked by bollards or used for parking spaces, temporary street furniture, green boxes and other street design modules have been installed. The City Terraces project of the Future Mobility Network NRW is thus supplementing the test phase for Friedrich-Breuer-Straße in the first two months.
Street furniture will be dismantled at the beginning of August
The city draws a positive balance of the City Terraces project. The seating furniture is being used very actively. The city administration has received a lot of positive feedback on the seating options. As the project is limited to two months, the street furniture will be dismantled at the beginning of August. The plants and soil will be removed beforehand. They will be reused as part of the Beuel Mitte climate district and will be available for a garden project in a refugee shelter in Beuel.
Traffic routing has settled down
Until the end of November, only buses, streetcars, cabs, delivery traffic and bicycles are permitted on Friedrich-Breuer-Straße between Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and Hans-Böckler-Straße. After a period of familiarization, the new traffic routing has largely settled in, according to the city administration. Although a few cars still use the road illegally, traffic has calmed down considerably compared to the original situation.
Background
In 2022 and 2023, the city administration developed numerous ideas for Friedrich-Breuer-Straße in an extensive participation process. A key wish from the participation process was to implement changes gradually. In April 2024, the Beuel district council decided to temporarily adjust the traffic routing and upgrade the side areas with mobile elements such as benches and planters based on a recommendation from the city administration.
