Climate districts start work

On Friday, December 13, 2024, the city of Bonn signed cooperation agreements with the sponsors of the Godesberg-Nord, Beuel-Mitte and Medinghoven climate districts. The agreements form the framework for the development of the participatory centers and a wide range of offers to strengthen neighbourhood engagement. At the same time, the first funding certificates were handed over.

On Thursday, December 12, the City Council confirmed the decision of the Committee for the Environment, Climate and Local Agenda on the climate districts in June 2024. In addition to the Godesberg-Nord and Beuel-Mitte climate districts, which have been in place since the summer, Medinghoven can now also start. The concept for the climate district in Bonn is still being developed and will be submitted for political consultation at the beginning of next year.

Mayor Katja Dörner: "When it comes to climate protection, there are always calls for everyone to be involved. With the climate districts, we are meeting this demand: they offer a wide range of opportunities for people in the district to get involved - a key prerequisite for achieving climate neutrality in Bonn. I am delighted that we can now get started!"

Three civil society organizations will begin their work in the first climate districts. In preparation, many discussions were held in the district - for example at a workshop at the Brotfabrik at the end of October, where partner organizations and interested parties exchanged ideas with the sponsor of the Beuel-Mitte climate district, the Brotfabrik cultural center in Bonn. Dr. Katja de Bragança, who works with people with and without Down syndrome to explain climate issues in an understandable way with the inclusive Beuel project "Climate made easy", reports: "We are delighted to have a socially and culturally oriented initiative in Beuel with the Klimaviertel Beuel, which is already promoting networking."

Preparations are also in full swing in Godesberg-Nord, where the Klimaviertel will move into a property at Bonner Straße 17 together with the new neighborhood management. Arzu Çetinkaya, Chairwoman of the Board of the "Kultur verbindet" association, and Christiane Kaspari, Head of Neighborhood Management Godesberg-Nord at Arbeiterwohlfahrt, are looking forward to the cooperation at the shared location and see many synergies: Kaspari praises above all the fact that she has been able to work closely with the Klimaviertel from the very beginning. "We will deal with social and ecological issues in the district and become a place for exchange, encounters and information. In this way, we can also discuss environmental protection with people who are currently still afraid that climate protection will cost them dearly."

In Medinghoven, the search for a suitable property for the local participatory center - the neighborhood office - is the top priority. Saman Haddad from the Bonn Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Learning (BIM) knows: "A reliable contact point where people can find low-threshold events and advice and talk to each other is key to success in Medinghoven."
