Ernst Moritz Arndt Garden

The neat Ernst Moritz Arndt House, begun in 1819, is the oldest of the early neoclassical Rhine villas. In 1818, the poet acquired two vineyards on a hill directly on the Rhine. At the time, he was considered an eccentric, as it was not customary to build outside the city walls. But some people followed his example...

The Ernst Moritz Arndt House on Adenauerallee is part of the Bonn City Museum.

For Arndt, Bonn was his adopted home on the Rhine. His house was built by the architect Friedrich Waesemann, master builder in Cologne. At the turn of 1819/20, the Arndt family moved into the simple rectangular building.

Arndt named his house "Lülo" after a small wooded area on the island of Rügen as a reminder of his childhood. He wrote to his sister on September 26, 1818: "I long to go out into the open (...) The spot is now a vineyard and has the magnificent splendor of the Siebengebirge with its chain of forests and castles and the proud ruins of the old Godesberg Castle right in front of it."
