If you are in possession of a so-called Schengen visa (category C), which allows you to stay in Germany for purposes such as visits, business trips or tourism, and you wish to stay in Germany beyond the period of validity of this visa, please note the following information.

The issuance and extension of a Schengen visa is governed by Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of July 13, 2009 establishing a Community Code on Visas (OJ EU No. L 243 of 15.09.2009; p. 1).

In principle, it is not possible to extend a Schengen visa. (see also Art. 11 of the Schengen Convention of 14.06.1985; OJ EC 2000 No. L 239/19-BGBl. II 1013-1085).

An exception can only be considered

• in the event of force majeure or
• humanitarian reasons and
• for serious personal reasons.

The holder of the visa must present suitable documents to prove that he or she is prevented from leaving Germany within the period of validity of the Schengen visa for one of the aforementioned reasons.

In addition, sufficient health insurance cover and proof of subsistence without recourse to public funds (e.g. social assistance) must be provided.
