Overview
The certificate of good conduct is information about a specific person from the Federal Central Criminal Register, in which all criminal court decisions are stored. You will need a certificate of good conduct, for example, if you have to prove to your new employer that you have no criminal record or if you are applying for an official permit, such as a restaurant license.
There is also an extended certificate of good conduct. This is required, for example, for people who look after, educate or train minors on a professional or voluntary basis. If you apply for the extended certificate of good conduct, you will need a document stating which office or authority requires the extended certificate of good conduct from you.
You can apply for the certificate of good conduct directly online at the responsible Federal Office of Justice if the online ID function of your ID card is activated. You can find the relevant links for the application as well as an information sheet with explanations under "Forms and links".
If you do not wish to apply for the certificate of good conduct online, you must apply for the certificate of good conduct at the registration office responsible for your place of residence. The application will then be forwarded to the Federal Office of Justice.
The Federal Office of Justice will issue the certificate of good conduct and send it either to you or directly to the office or authority that requires it from you. To do this, you must provide the address, the purpose of use and the file number of this authority with your application.
The processing time depends on the Federal Office of Justice. If you have applied for the certificate of good conduct in person via the City of Bonn, your application will be forwarded there the following day at the latest. Please enquire about the processing time for your certificate of good conduct directly at the Federal Office of Justice.
Citizens who hold the nationality of one or more other member states of the European Union in addition to or instead of German citizenship and who apply for a certificate of good conduct must receive a so-called European Certificate of Good Conduct from the Federal Office of Justice. In addition to the German certificate of good conduct, the European Certificate of Good Conduct contains information on entries in the criminal record of the Member State of origin in the language transmitted, provided that the Member State of origin provides for transmission in accordance with its law.
The average processing time for the European Certificate of Good Conduct is six weeks. Please enquire about the processing time for your certificate of good conduct directly at the Federal Office of Justice.
