Even in pre-Roman times, the site of later Bonn was settled by the Eburones. At the beginning of the Roman Empire, the Ubians moved here from the right bank of the Rhine. In the course of the Roman campaigns into Germania, the first Roman troops were stationed in Bonn, and from 43 AD, a legion was stationed north of the Uubian settlement, which remained there with only minor interruptions until the end of the Roman Empire. A camp suburb with houses for the soldiers' families and all kinds of workshops and stores developed in the area, leaving behind many traces of their everyday life.
Most of the finds can be found in the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn, but there are also some remains in the city that offer a glimpse of the Romans in Bonn.
For many years, the Verein von Altertumsfreunden im Rheinlande (Association of Friends of Antiquities in the Rhineland) has offered guided tours to discover these remains and learn more about their historical and cultural background.
These free guided tours last around 1.5 hours. The remains of the Roman baths at the Collegium Albertinum and the Roman legionary camp in Nordstadt form the beginning and end of the tour.
