The UNFCCC was established at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio in 1992. The Secretariat supports governments in implementing the agreement and monitors compliance with the commitments made by the participating countries to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous human interference and reduces risks to the climate system.
