In order to promote the idea of ecological gardening and as a kick-off event for facade and garden competitions, a "spring market" was held for the first time in 2000. It took place on 13 May at the Haus der Natur in the Waldau, where beekeepers, garden planners and nurseries, including the city's own nursery, which still existed at the time, presented themselves in a manageable setting. Information on organic gardening and dealing with nature was provided at stands and in the form of lectures in the Haus der Natur.
Due to the extremely positive response, the number of requests for participation increased and another location had to be found. In 2002, the spring market initially moved to Martinsplatz, with the positive side effect of being able to reach an even larger audience. Guided tours on the subject of "Trees in the city" were even organized as part of the market.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the Rheinaue, the market moved to the Rheinaue for a one-off event in 2004 before finding its permanent home on Münsterplatz in 2005, where it has become a permanent fixture in the City of Bonn's Events Calendar in its own right with its wide range of information and shopping opportunities relating to nature and gardens.
When selecting participants, the criteria of a sustainable approach to nature and organic gardening remain at the forefront. And so the market is enjoying increasing popularity due to its special flair.
