City of Bonn

Explanatory guide to the online forms and the eID

From home, Poppelsdorf Allee or Melbbad - a wide range of online services are available to our citizens around the clock, seven days a week. These can be completed not only on a computer, but also on a smartphone or tablet.

The City of Bonn offers a wide range of online services. Even if there are major visual differences, they have one thing in common - all online forms can be filled out from a smartphone, tablet or computer. Please note that some forms still need to be signed, for example because this is required by law.

These forms can be completed on a smartphone, tablet or computer, but must then be printed out, signed and sent by post to the address provided or brought to the appointment.

eID function makes it easier to fill in forms

We also offer selected and frequently used forms that still need to be signed with the online ID function (also known as the eID function) of the new ID card. With the online ID function, you authenticate yourself before filling in the form, and some fields are even automatically filled in with the data stored on the ID card. The remaining fields are filled in by you and, after submission, sent directly to the relevant department electronically via the secure government network (federal network). Please note that for data protection reasons you will not receive a confirmation e-mail and the processing time may vary.

Some online forms do not even require a signature. You can simply complete the form on screen and then submit it. It is automatically sent directly to the relevant department via the secure government network (federal network).

How do I use the online ID function (eID)?

To use your  online ID function (opens in a new tab) (also known as the eID function), you need an ID card in card format. This must be activated for the eID function.

1. you need a new ID card with the online ID function activated

Which ID card do you have?

  • Do you have an ID card, but did not agree to activate the online ID function when you applied?
You can do this at the Citizens Service Center.
  • You are in possession of an ID card and have agreed to the online ID function?
Wonderful! You can continue directly with step 2!

2. you need an NFC-enabled smartphone (Android or iOS) or a card reader

You may still need to install a driver for the card reader. You can find information on this in the device description of the respective product. A driver should not be necessary for an NFC-enabled smartphone.

3. you need the official ID card app

4th PIN letter

When you applied for your ID card, you were given a PIN letter (if you applied for an ID card before 17.02.2025, the PIN letter was sent to you by post). The PIN letter contains all the information about your ID card, including the five-digit transport PIN.

To activate the online ID function, you must assign a six-digit PIN of your choice. This can be done when you collect your ID card from the Citizens' Registration Office, on your computer with your card reader or directly on your smartphone with the ID card app.

5. now you can use the eID function!

Please note that the AusweisApp must be installed and open on your device for authentication. Otherwise you will receive an error message indicating a failed forwarding attempt.

Remote access

There is also the option of remote access. The advantage of remote access is that you can authenticate yourself with your smartphone, but you can complete the form conveniently on your computer.

To do this, you also need to install the AusweisApp on your PC and then install the AusweisApp on your smartphone. The two devices can be paired with each other in the AusweisApp under the "Smartphone as card reader" tab in the settings.

You can then authenticate yourself and complete the required form conveniently on your computer.

Please note: When opening the respective form, the AusweisApp must be open on the computer and smartphone.
